Jane Irwin was part of a team selected to review the future of the urban core of Sydney Olympic Park, with the objective of creating a lively centre with a viable future. The team worked with specialist consultants in the fields of economic development, social and cultural environments, environmental sustainability and transport.
The first stage of the project involved thorough analysis, in an attempt to go beyond the accepted image of the Olympic site, and discover the real issues in terms of natural and cultural environment, management, transport and the day to day life of the place. Proposals for the urban core included new streets and open spaces, increased residential density, new commercial, educational and sporting resources, and a new retail centre at the heart of the core.
